Findings revealed that Parent Teachers’ Association has played a crucial role in the development of education. In spite of the official recognition of the role of the Parents Teachers’ Association in the educational system, not many people are aware of its functions
Parents’ Teachers’ Association: This is an association of parents and guardians of students/pupils attending a particular school and the teachers teaching in such school.
Education describes the total process of human learning by which knowledge is impacted; facilities, training and skill development.
STATEMENT OE THE PROBLEM
Because education is perceived as an instrument for projecting national development, there is diversity in educational programmes.
This leads to an increase in the number of schools as well as students enrollment. To meet up with this increase, more funds were needed in order to provide more classrooms, teachers, libraries, textbooks, non-teaching staff furniture and other intramural in education system; since the government cannot handle the educational needs alone, it is imperative for the various groups (interest groups) to supplement government efforts in the secondary school development. Among these interest groups comes the Parents Teachers’ Association (PTA).
PTA supports and speaks on behalf of children in the schools in the communities and before the government groups and other organizations that make decisions affecting children. It helps parents develop the skill they need to raise and protect their children.
The PTA has overtime been an organization that has monitored progress being made by the school. For efficient administration of any organization, schools inclusive, all hands must be on deck en-route to its actualization.
In some schools, it is seen as a fund raising group while in some other schools it is seen as one of the highest decision making body of the school but which ever way one has to look at it, this association, is a major stakeholder in the effective administration of the school.
Roles of the Teachers Association:
To represent the views of parents/guardians of the school
To promote a positive view of parents via effective collaboration with the parents’ representatives on the board management.
To inform parents of current changes in the school system, if the needs arise.
To network with other parent associations through involvement with national parents council.
To establish a forum through which parents and teachers can exchange information and research in relation to education/ welfare of children
To provide solution on better ways to administer the school.
To support parents, teachers and students to ensure that all children are treated in accordance with the ethos of the school.
To support the teaching staff and to work with them in delivering the school curriculum.
To help raise funds for the school and the parents association, in consultation with the principal and board of management.
To keep parents informed about activities planned for the school.
To influence policy development at national level once affiliated to the national parents’ council.
Parents get in involved in challenges faced by schools and become part of the solution. By developing a closer relationship with parents, students’ achievement improves and the school develops a positive reputation in the community.
PTA improves communication by coordinating the production of a school newsletter and information fliers, keeping the entire school community informed of current events, issues and accomplishments.
The main role of the PTA is to build strong working relationships among parents’-teachers and schools in support of students; parents may raise concern about such things as homework or proposed changes in the school curriculum.
The Parents Teachers Association which is an organization composed of parents and teachers and finding ways of improving life and performance areas, cultural, academic; social and ethnical.
PTA is formed mainly for the sole reason of finding means to enhance education by taking into account the welfare and education of the learners. Parents and teachers study ways and means of bringing up well educated, cooperative and perfectly behaved young citizens. Both parents and teachers seek effective ways of developing each child’s potential. Parents play the following roles:
Explain the roles of the school to the community; this is how teachers and community members come to a more harmonious relationship.
They give their points of view to the teachers, concerning academic improvement and moral standard.
Help head teachers and their staff maintain effective discipline among their students. It helps in enhancing the educational system by focusing also on what students need to be successful in their learning, including nutrition, health, school safety, physical fitness and general well- being to ensure that children/students succeed.
However, with overall round efficient development oriented Governor, His Excellency Engr. David Nweze Umahi, the PTA in Ebonyi State is bound to gain greater attention for performance and prominence.
