EBONYI STATE RE-INTRODUCES SCHOOL SPORTS

Unlike the past administration in Ebonyi State that paid little or no attention to school sports and overall physical development of Ebonyi children, the present administration as led by Engr. Chief Dave Nweze Umahi has caused a great turn around in the state basic education sub-sector in area of school sports.

The sports loving Governor, in agreement with the popular adage that “a sound mind in a sound body is a short but a full description of a happy physical state in the World” has in his inception of office in 2015 opened the gateway to fishing out sports talents in the state.

This has led to selection of young sports stars who have represented the state in various capacities in external sports competitions and as well established friendly relationship among the pupils and students of the basic education, through fair and friendly competitions.

Basic education sports programme is categorized into the lower basic; the primary school section, the upper basic; the junior secondary school section.

Sports activities in basic education industry is tailored to cover games such as football, hand ball, volley ball and table tennis for boys and girls of lower and upper basic.

There are also track and field events like 100 metres, 200 metres, relay race, high and long jump; and traditional sports such as swimming and dancing.

Since 2015 to date, Ebonyi State Universal Basic Education Board as led by High Chief Hyacinth Ikpor (KSJI) under the distinguished sponsorship of His Excellency, Engr. Chief Dave Nweze Umahi , FNSE, FNATE, has been organizing and participating in school sports competitions within and outside the state.

The state participated in the 7th and 8th editions of annual school sports competition in 2016 and 2017 respectively and is preparing to participate in 2018 edition, while it has just concluded with the first edition of unity primary school football competition in the state.

The State Government in collaboration with Universal Basic Education Commission through Ebonyi SUBEB has supplied sports equipment such as football, handball, sports boots and others to the 1,064 primary school and 232 junior secondary schools in the state.

For the schools that participated in the state Basic Education School Sports, it was observed that pupils and students enrolment rate has increased and the rate of school drop –out reduced due to the impact the sports activities injected into the system.

Recently, there was an indication that some private sectors and stakeholders who acknowledged the impacts the school sports made in the overall development of basic education in the state, have indicated interest to help the State Government in the sponsorship.

Here is a clarion call to patriots to commit themselves to development of the Basic Education School Sports for it is said, “A Healthy Nation is a Wealthy Nation”

The 8th Edition of the Jamboree was attended by 150 contingents representing the three Senatorial zones of the state, 25 primary schools in the metropolis, Head teachers, Education Secretaries, Staff of SUBEB , Board members, SUBEB Chairman and the representative of His Excellency, Prof. John .U. Eke , the immediate past Commissioner for Education.

The competition was peaceful and devoid of hitches. Cash prizes and trophies were given to the winners. In the overall, Ebonyi South Zone emerged the champion in the male soccer tournament, while Ebonyi central Zone emerged champion in athletics.
